Oil Painting
This work explores the relationship between me and my father as the image is based on an old photograph of us many years back. In contrast to the surrounding, my father was painted in a dull and faded color as what he reminds me of up till now is the cigarettes which he smokes on a daily basis. I remembered that as he is old, time may just pass us by without knowing and he might just faded away.
The sea signifies the comfort zone that one's mind is in. The music that the sea plays soothes the mind as the wind blows and time continues to flow.
The study explores the impasto style where the paint itself expresses the lines, shapes and forms of the bouquet.
In this study, two styles were explored, one tint wash and another thick outlined style.
Inspired from Harmen Steenwyck's vanities painting, I created my own version with objects belonging to an artist, a study of the objects and the artist as reference. Vanitas paintings are used to remind people that the earthly pleasures would come to end at the end of our lives, we should not indulge too much in this life.
